An architectural monument
The Vienna Hofburg is one of the most historically important architectural monuments in Europe: for centuries this imperial palace was the nerve centre of a world power, and the sprawling complex with its mix of architectural styles was the setting for events of global political significance.
The Hofburg symbolizes 640 years of Habsburg rule. As the Habsburgs’ power increased, the original, rather modest building was continually extended and remodelled. However, the dynasty always retained a great veneration for the architectural legacy of their forefathers: individual edifices of superb quality were added, but the overall character of the palace complex which had grown organically over the centuries remained predominant.
