Napoleon Bonaparte

King of the French

* 15. Aug 1769, † 05. May 1821

Napoleon was a supporter of the French Revolution. Under his command, the revolutionary armies advanced across Europe. In 1799 he became First Consul and thus in effect sole ruler. Offered the title of emperor after a plebiscite, he crowned himself Emperor of the French in the presence of Pope Pius VII in the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris in December 1804. His final defeat at Waterloo in Belgium has become proverbial.
