William ‘the Ambitious’
Duke of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola from 1386

Born in 1370 (exact date of birth unknown)
Died in Vienna on 15 July 1406

William’s life was marked by conflicts with his relatives: the eldest son of Duke Leopold III, he initially shared power with his cousin, Albrecht IV on the basis of an agreement concluded at Hollenburg in 1395. After a few years his share in the government was extended to include his brothers Ernst and Friedrich. His death in 1406 led to divisive conflict between his brothers Leopold and Ernest.
