Matthäus Merian: Schloss Hernals, copperplate engraving, 1649

The picture shows the village of Hernals that lay beyond the gates of the city together with its Schloss, an object of suspicion for the Habsburg authorities as it constituted an important focus of Protestantism in the Vienna area when it was no longer permitted to be practised within the city walls.

Note the heavy traffic on the road leading to the Schloss, the picture hinting at the movement of Protestants out of the city.
