The Imperial Cross was one of the most important insignia of the Holy Roman Empire. It served as a receptacle for relics that were held to possess particular salvific effect, including particles of the True Cross. Sections of the gemstone-encrusted front of the cross can be removed to reveal recesses that accommodated the holy relics.
