Commemorative plaque for the wedding of Marie Christine and Albert of Saxe-Teschen in the Chapel of Schloss Hof

In 1766, one of the happiest marriages of the imperial family was concluded at Schloss Hof, when the 24-year-old Archduchess Marie Christine was married to Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen in the palace chapel. She is often referred to as Maria Theresa's favorite daughter and was the only one of her children who was allowed to choose her husband at own will. This wedding was an exception in the Habsburg marriage policy because it absolutely did not follow the usual purely rational calculations of the dynasty’s marriage policy.
