Vienna – The Court Museums

1857–1913

Forming part of the Ringstrasse ensemble, these two museums were built to house the imperial dynastic collections. Designed in the Historicist style, they were conceived as elements of the Imperial Forum that was never realised in its entirety. Opened in 1889 and 1891 respectively, the museums held the rich imperial collections of art and natural history that had formerly been housed in the Hofburg and were now to be made accessible to the general public.
