Trieste

1850–1918

Lying on the northern Adriatic, Trieste came under Habsburg rule in 1382 and after being made a free port in 1719 became one of the largest and most important ports of the Habsburg Monarchy. In cultural and linguistic terms, Trieste was one of the most diverse cities in the Austrian lands: languages spoken here included Italian, Slovenian, Serbo-Croat, German and other Mediterranean tongues.
Around 1900, at the peak of its importance, the city of Trieste had approximately. 200,000 inhabitants and was the fourth-largest city in the Monarchy after Vienna, Budapest and Prague.
