Albrecht Dürer: Design for the Great Triumphal Car, c. 1516/17, pen and brown ink

Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528): Designs for the triumphal procession

1471–1528

A native of Nuremberg, Dürer trained as a goldsmith, painter and copperplate engraver. He was one of the first German artists to draw landscapes from nature. His studies such as the Young Hare are today famous the world over. Dürer raised the copperplate engraving and the woodcut to the status of works of art in their own right, emphasizing the connection between art and science. From 1512 he received several commissions from Emperor Maximilian I and executed designs for the latter’s monumental Triumphzug.
