Although Emperor Franz Joseph, as head of the family, was usually very strict in granting marriage licenses, he was sometimes surprisingly generous - as was the case with his beloved granddaughter Elisabeth Marie, the only daughter of Crown Prince Rudolf. Growing into a strong-willed young woman, she married Prince Otto zu Windisch-Graetz at the age of 16, for which she had to give up her rights to the throne in 1902.
