The marriage of Joseph II to Isabella of Bourbon-Parma

Oil on canvas, Martin van Meytens and workshop, after 1760 (detail)

The original large-format painting is part of the cycle of paintings depicting the celebrations on the occasion of the wedding of Joseph II to Isabella of Bourbon-Parma, today presented in the Hall of Ceremonies of Schönbrunn Palace. The bride and groom can be seen in front of the altar, the members of the imperial family have taken their seats on the left, and the clergy can be seen on the right. Numerous chandeliers with candles illuminate the interior of the church, the walls of which are decorated with tapestries.
