Crown Prince Rudolf on horseback in a field marshal’s campagne uniform. Oil painting by Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz, 1889

Rudolf had commissioned the portrait not long before his death. Rudolf was still posing for the portrait, which was meant to be a present for the emperor, only days before his death. The painting was finished in March 1889, two months after the events at Mayerling.
