Gottfried Semper

Born in Hamburg, the architect and architectural historian Gottfried Semper was professor of architecture at the Academy in Dresden, where he designed the famous opera house. He sided with the revolutionaries in 1848 and had to flee Saxony. Nevertheless, Franz Joseph summoned him to Vienna in 1869, where he collaborated with Karl von Hasenauer in designing and building the two Court Museums, the Neue Burg and the Burgtheater. Following conflicts with Hasenauer he left Vienna in 1876.
