Andreas Hofer

* 22. Nov 1767, † 20. Feb 1810

Andreas Hofer led the Tyrolean resistance against the Bavarian-French occupation in 1809. He was a confidant of Archduke Johann, who acted as Tyrol’s protector and had modernized the Tyrolean Landwehr (‘home guard’) prior to the Bavarian occupation. After his execution Hofer was given a tomb in the court church at Innsbruck, and many other monuments were raised to him. His memory is still revered in Tyrol, especially in the ‘Andreas Hofer-Lied’, today the Tyrolean anthem.
