Duke Rudolf IV, painting, 1360/65

This likeness of Rudolf IV is regarded as the earliest portrait in its own right to be executed north of the Alps and shows its subject as a self-created archduke, identified by the first version of the archducal coronet that he is wearing here. The portrait originally hung in the presbytery of St Stephen’s Cathedral above the cenotaph of Rudolf IV and his wife.
