Wiener Neustadt

1452–1493

Wiener Neustadt was founded by the Babenbergs after they had acquired Styria in 1192, and was intended to consolidate the link between the Austrian ancestral lands and the newly-acquired territories the other side of the important mountain passes of the Semmering and the Wechsel.
The city achieved special status under the regency of Emperor Frederick III, when it briefly replaced Vienna as he imperial city of residence. Wiener Neustadt has another link with the Habsburgs in the Military Academy founded by Maria Theresa.
