The Vienna Hofburg

1278–1918

Between the thirteenth century and the end of Habsburg rule in 1918, the Vienna Hofburg developed by stages into the most important residence of the dynasty.
The original Gothic structure around the present-day Schweizerhof (Swiss Court) was successively extended, most notably during the Baroque era and during the nineteenth century. Over time, it evolved into a sprawling complex of different wings which dominates the historic centre of the city.
