Pressburg

1527–1792

Pressburg (present-day Bratislava) lies on the River Danube in the extreme west of the historical kingdom of Hungary (the Hungarian name for the city is Pozsony). From 1536 to 1784 it became the Hungarian capital and city of coronation.
As in many other towns and cities of the Habsburg Empire, the co-existence of various nationalities in Pressburg – the main languages spoken here were German, Hungarian and Slovakian – was increasingly hampered by ethnic conflict during the nineteenth century.
After the collapse of the Monarchy, Pressburg became the capital of Slovakia as part of the Republic of Czechoslovakia and capital of the Republic of Slovakia in 1993.
