Tobacco leaves – A popular and a profitable commodity

1600

The tobacco plant originally came from America. After the ‘discovery’ of the continent it was brought to Europe, where people believed it had a positive effect on both body and mind. When smoking tobacco became popular with large sections of the population it also became an important commercial commodity. State institutions repeatedly tried to get their share of the profits from the consumption of tobacco by establishing controls and monopolies over the trade in it.
