A picture clock showing Franz II (I) – His study had a carpet from Linz on the floor

1828

This clock, made in 1831 and put into a picture based on an engraving, shows Emperor Franz II (I) at the desk of his study in the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) in Vienna. On the floor there is a carpet manufactured at the Woollen Wares Manufactory in Linz and laid in 1828. It is 9.6 metres long and 8.4 metres wide, making it one of the largest carpets ever produced in the factory. There were times in the middle of the eighteenth century when the Imperial-Royal Privileged Woollen Wares Manufactory employed more than 10,000 people, some of them outworkers living in the surrounding countryside.
