The Austrian expedition to Brazil 1817-1821

On the occasion of his daughter Leopoldine’s marriage to the heir to the Brazilian throne, Emperor Franz I decided to send an expedition to Brazil. State Chancellor Metternich was charged with the overall leadership of the expedition. They were to collect precious woods, animals, minerals and plants and send them back to Europe. A ‘Brasilianum’ was set up in Vienna, where the spoils from the expedition were to be displayed.
