1918: The end of Habsburg rule

The death of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1916 after a reign of sixty-eight years marked the symbolic end of the Monarchy. In reality the Monarchy did not collapse until the end of the First World War in the autumn of 1918, when Emperor Karl, his successor, abdicated and new nation states were established in the former Habsburg territories.
