Josepha of Bavaria

* 1739, † 1767

In 1765 Maria Josepha of Bavaria, a granddaughter of Joseph I, married Joseph II, who became emperor and co-regent with his mother, Maria Theresa, in the same year. Festive performances, with Joseph’s brothers and sisters taking dramatic roles, were given at Schönbrunn to mark the occasion. The marriage was unhappy – Joseph, still grieving for his first wife, Isabella of Parma, had not wanted to remarry and avoided his new wife. After only two years of marriage Maria Josepha died of smallpox.
