Duke Frederick IV of Tyrol, ‘Empty-Pockets’, 16th century

Frederick IV, ‘Empty-Pockets’

Duke of Austria; from 1406 ruler over Tyrol

Born in 1382 (exact date of birth unknown)
Died in Innsbruck on 24 June 1439

Frederick ruled over the Swabian territories and Tyrol at the beginning of the fifteenth century. There he gradually secured his power base against the nobility. However, the ancestral Habsburg lands in Switzerland were lost during his reign. The Tyrolean silver resources brought him financial security. His nickname ‘Empty-Pockets’ was coined by his aristocratic adversaries.
