William ‘the Ambitious’

William’s life was marked by conflicts with his relatives: the eldest son of Duke Leopold III, he initially shared power with his cousin, Albrecht IV on the basis of an agreement concluded at Hollenburg in 1395. After a few years his share in the government was extended to include his brothers Ernst and Friedrich. His death in 1406 led to divisive conflict between his brothers Leopold and Ernest.
