The life of Duke Leopold IV was marked by the numerous family conflicts that arose in the line of his father, Duke Leopold III, around 1400. In 1395 he had been promised the western Habsburg dominions, but these agreements were later altered several times. These differences within the family led to the outbreak of armed conflict between Leopold and his brother Ernest ‘the Iron’.
